This style of “girls longboarding video” is quickly developing into it’s own genre: Pretty girls, city streets, high production values, light hearted music, and a heavy dose of sunshine and smiles are the hallmarks. This one comes from a crew of ladies in Helsinki and it doesn’t disappoint.

The film was mainly shot in the capital region of Helsinki and the first and foremost purpose was to present girls’ longboarding and Helsinki’s rich street culture and great locations – not really the traditional downhill bombing. Fashion Film Festival is after all, part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 -year.

Longboard Girls Helsinki is an open and unaffiliated group of female longboarders, whose short film Northern Flats, filmed in the capital region of Helsinki, is the first of its kind. The film is a cheerful declaration of girls’ longboarding and brings out the most fabulous scenery and rich street culture of Helsinki.

The premiere of the short film (8 min.) will be on Friday August 3rd at 8:15PM in the upstairs lobby of Bio Rex at Lasipalatsi, as part of the Lasipalatsi Fashion Film Festival’s Bright Young Things -series.

Justus Zimmerly

Born in Chicago and raised on the flat Canadian prairies, it wasn’t until moving to Ontario for school in 2005 that Justus got a taste for riding skateboards down hills. Since then it’s been a bit of an obsession. He graduated with a degree in Film Studies, but spent as much time focussed on skateboarding as he did on studying. Now he’s living the good life in Oakland, California, riding his motorcycle and working as Editor-in-chief for Skate[Slate].
