Throwback Thursdays: Nights in Vancouver
As I recently scrolled through photos I shot for Skate[Slate] Longboarding Magazine last year, I found a whole set of photos taken at night while visiting Vancouver, BC. I was shooting with Reese Boyko, Alex Charleson, Evan Dickinson, Cameron Frazier, Aidan Lynds, Colm Lyons, Laine Jackart, Sam Neville, and Victoria Waddington on two separate nights. I hadn’t found a place for them in my articles in the past, but they’re pretty cool so I’ll share them now.
One cold night while Jonathan Nuss and I were both in Vancouver visiting, we went out shooting and skating with Aidan Lynds and Victoria Waddington. Jonathan held a flash for me and Aidan and Victoria shredded close together at a tight lil’ spot.
On another night from the same visit to Vancouver, Les Roberston and I went out and bought a bunch of glow-sticks… Nope, not for a rave, but for some night time lapse with a bunch of Vancouver homies. We couldn’t find a place dark enough for the exposure to work out well. I don’t think the photos turned out too crazy awesome, but it was still a fun time.
After ditching the glow-stick idea and going for some downhill skating, we ended up at the Stables spot. This spot is a legendary sliding zone for downhill skateboarding. A decade ago, riders were hitting the spot rain or shine and spinning 360’s ’til the cows came home. Nowadays it’s not as popular, I don’t think. But at night, there is a gate closed at the top so you can essentially have a closed road to yourself. We shot some photos skating around the gate and then moved to some group runs down the hill. Les helped by holding a flash.
