Life On The Road: An Interview With Jonathan Douglas

JD in front of the van

Jonathan Douglas has been living on the road for a while now, skating and filming to his heart's content. We rang him up to ask a few questions about his migrant lifestyle. Check out some of his work for Loaded, both in front of the camera and behind it.

Justus: Where are you right now?

Jon: (Laughs) Right now I’m sitting by a dumpster outside of McDonalds using their WiFi, living it up!

Justus: Life on the road, eh? That’s awesome.

Justus: Why don’t you introduce yourself a little bit?

Jon: My name’s Jonathan Douglas, I’m 18 years old, just out of high school. I’ve been skating for a year and a half, almost two years now and it’s basically taken over my life. I had plans to go do the whole university route but skating took over and that’s basically my only option! I love it so much, it’s my addiction.

Justus: I think that’s a pretty common story! What was it that inspired you to go on the trip, beyond your love of skating?

Jon: It was pretty much the options that I had: Go to school and get a job, or do something cool with the little bit of savings that you have. I basically just thought of the coolest thing I could think of, being on the road for long periods of time in a really cool spot, escaping the Calgary winter. This was pretty much the best thing I came up with.

Wheels

Courtesy of Wikipedia

Wheels wheels wheels.

Wheels keep on turning.

Wheels keep us turning.

Wheels turn as we turn.

Skateboard wheels turn.

Longboard wheels turn.

Turns out, wheels turn on many different things.

Some wheels are used for work...and some wheels are used for play.

What kind of wheel will you ride on today?

If you thought this post was gonna be about Abec 11, Orangatang, Seismic, Venom, or any other wheel you put on your longboard, you're misled. I might do that for a future post, but for now, it's time to watch some videos. If you have time to kick it, then keep reading. Maybe you'll be inspired by the following content and find your passion with flow riding or rockboarding.

Random Day in January with K-rimes

This quick video of Kevin Reimer shows how stoked he is to be Riding Again so much sooner than the doctors told him back in May (2011).  Proof that hard-work, dedication and visualization really do make a difference.  Next week the metal in his foot comes out.

Welcome back Kevo! See you on the hill Brother.

Ambassador Abroad: France, Part 1 - Downhill / Freeride Longboarding

Lots of young people spend time living abroad. Lots of people shred hills. Lots of people make videos. Few of those people, however, combine the three so well that it makes you want to drop everything and move to France for a year. Mike Gerard is one of those rare few. Check out this document of his skate adventures in the beautiful countryside of France.
